TRID wishes to thank the League for the
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in Nashville for providing one of the
interpreters used during the conference.

|
The
keynote address, "Retaining Your Morals While Interpreting", was
given by Mike Helms, a Deaf minister to the Deaf.
He reminded us that it is not only possible, but necessary, to remember
that we can interpret words or ideas we may not agree with, without
compromising our own beliefs. He later took time to for some one-on-one
conversation during the break following his remarks.
(Webmaster's note: Mike was such an
lively speaker that you'll see it was
difficult to catch him when he wasn't moving!) |

Sandra
Gish came all the way from Oregon to teach us how to think ahead while
interpreting, to predict to ourselves what might come next. This technique
removes a great deal of tension from the interpreting process by helping
us be more prepared as the assignment moves along.
Her animated teaching style made learning this concept, new to many of us,
not only valuable but fun too! |
