Oral Interpreting Techniques for
the Sign Language Interpreter
was presented by Tammy S. Cantrell (CSC,OIC:C, Kentucky)
at the NTRID Spring Workshop March 23 and 24, 2001.

If you've never been to one of Tammy's workshops, you have no idea how much fun it can be to learn about a type of interpreting many of us have little or no experience doing.
Tammy
's part of an elite group of interpreters with long-standing
certification as an oral interpreter, and she's also a wonderful teacher with a relaxed and animated style that engaged the class right away.

Here are a few snapshots from our workshop -- hold your cursor over each picture below to display its caption.

Tammy explained the differences between gesturing and signing as they relate to oral interpreting. Tammy demonstrated for us how difficult (sometimes impossible!) it is to see some sounds on the mouth. Tammy enjoys teaching this subject...and her enjoyment is contagious!

There were 29 interpreters in attendance from across Tennessee, as well as from Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia!

What a good-looking bunch of interpreters, and all in one room!

Tammy used a combination of tapes and group exercises to keep the class active and involved.

The videotape exercises were fun...although it was hard sometimes to stay "in role" when they were TOO much fun!     Tammy reminded us about the differences between enunciation and exaggeration.

We all tried our skills one-on-one with speechreading a few exercises.

What NTRID workshop is complete without lunch... special thanks to Sharon McLaughlin of NTRID for pulling it all together.

Tammy might have been having as much fun as we were!     Two, or even three or four, heads are better than one on a fast-paced videotape exercise.

Break time, and we're networking while we polish off the lunch leftovers.

Tammy told us about the NRID OIC testing procedures.

Big round of applause at the end of a very worthwhile workshop!

We hope you enjoyed the workshop -- in person if you were here, or by visiting this page!

And now... mark your calendars June 1 and 2, 2001, to attend the TRID annual conference here in Nashville...then flip over to September and pencil in NTRID's "Interpreting the Performing Arts" workshop on the 22nd and 23rd!
